All parts of solar panels work in unison to convert sunlight into usable energy. One small but important element of the panel is the PV junction box. This box is installed on the back of a solar module and provides a safe connection route for the module's internal and external wiring. Although it remains less visible, the junction box contributes positively to the safety, operational dependability, and long-term reliability of a solar panel.
What Does a PV Junction Box Do?
The PV junction box is an enclosure that is situated on the backside of a photovoltaic (PV) module. This box is responsible for connecting the solar cell’s string or the module’s electrical ribbon to the external electrical cables of the solar system.
The box is also a provider of a safe and dependable connection for the solar module, where electrical components such as bypass diodes and termination points are situated. Since a solar panel operates outdoors, the junction box has to defend the connections against moisture, dust and other effects of weather. In simple language, its role is to provide a connection between the solar panel and the external solar circuit.
What Is the Function of a PV Junction Box?
The primary function of a junction box is to provide a secure and dependable connection for a solar module.
Its primary functions are as follows:
Joins panel internal circuits to external cables
Provides a connector for external circuits
Houses the bypass diodes
Helps protect the external circuits from the ingress of moisture and other environmental agents
Enables a continuous flow of current to the module
Serves as a connector for cable connections to the solar array
A junction box should ensure electrical and mechanical reliability throughout the operational life of a solar module.
How Does a PV Junction Box Function?
Solar cells, when exposed to sunlight, generate DC electricity. The cells are wired electrically to form an array and a DC circuit. The cells are internally wired to the back of the panel, which ultimately connects to the junction box.
In the junction box, electrical terminals are provided to connect the internal circuits to output cables. The output cables connect to other modules of the array or to the extended PV system.
Bypass diodes are also contained within the junction box, and serve their function when different segments of a module are exposed to differing amounts of sunlight.
The segment is as follows:
Solar cells --> Internal connection circuits --> PV junction box --> DC cables --> Solar system
Therefore, the junction box is the interface between the modular system and the solar array.
Certification and Testing
PV junction boxes are subject to specific safety and performance requirements. IEC 62790 establishes requirements and testing considerations for junction boxes used with photovoltaic modules. For module manufacturers, certification and documented testing provide an additional level of confidence when selecting connectivity components.
